Bioinformatics - enhancing our daily lives
Welcome to the SIB’s public information site — a diverse collection of web resources for the public, students and schoolchildren.
Over the past 30 years, new biological research techniques, combined with developments in information technology, have increased both the amount and complexity of biological data.
That’s why scientists often apply information technology to biological problems—a science called bioinformatics.
Scientists use bioinformatics to store, process and analyse large amount of data—advancing their knowledge and understanding of biological processes.
This, in turn, can lead to scientific breakthroughs that enhance our quality of life—for example, designing better medical treatments or improving crops.
